From Proto-Germanic *standaną, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂-. Cognate with Old Frisian standa, Old Saxon standan, Old High German stantan, Old Norse standa, Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐌽 (standan). The Germanic source is cognate with Greek ἵστημι (hístēmi), Latin stare, Old Irish tairissiur, Old Slavic stojati (Russian стоять).
