    Inherited from Middle High German stëln, from Old High German stelan, from Proto-West Germanic *stelan, from Proto-Germanic *stelaną. The rarer pronunciation with /e/ is from compromise between /ɛ/ and inflected /i/; the vowel alternation is then lost.
