Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *tьrnъ, from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥nós, from *(s)ter- (stiff). Cognate with Czech and Slovene trn, Bulgarian трън (trǎn), Serbo-Croatian трн, trn, Russian тёрн (tjorn), терние (ternije). Non-Slavic cognates include English thorn, Sanskrit तृण (tṛ́ṇa, grass).
