From Malay takut, from Proto-Malayic *takut, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *takut (compare Maori mataku, Rapa Nui mataku, Tagalog takot), from Proto-Austronesian *matakut. While some islamic Scholars assume that this word is cognate with Arabic تَقْوَى (taqwā) due to its philosophic definition such as in the sentence 'Takutlah hanya kepada Allah' ('Be afraid only of Allah').
