From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Japanese, 鉄板焼き (てっぱんやき, teppan'yaki), from Middle Chinese 鐵 (tʰet "iron") + 板 (pǽn "board", "plank") + Japanese やき (yaki "to fry").

Usage notes
In English (particularly American English), this mostly refers to cooking steak on a teppan (griddle), while in Japanese one instead mostly cooks お好み焼き (okonomiyaki) on such griddles.
