Borrowed from Javanese truwèlu, from Portuguese coelho, from Old Galician-Portuguese cõello, from Vulgar Latin *cuniclus, from Latin cunīculus, from Ancient Greek κύνικλος (kúniklos), probably of Iberian origin. Doublet of kelinci, kuilu.
