From Middle English *tever, teapor, from Old English tēafor (“red, red lead, vermilion, purple; a material used in making salve; pigment, salve”), from Proto-Germanic *taubrą (“magic, sorcery”). Cognate with Dutch toverij (“sorcery, witchcraft”), German Zauber (“magic”), Icelandic töfrar (“magic, spells”).
