From Middle English *tever, teapor, from Old English tēafor (red, red lead, vermilion, purple; a material used in making salve; pigment, salve), from Proto-Germanic *taubrą (magic, sorcery). Cognate with Dutch toverij (sorcery, witchcraft), German Zauber (magic), Icelandic töfrar (magic, spells).
