From Old Swedish þranger, from Old Norse þrǫngr, from Proto-Germanic *þrangwaz (pressing, narrow), from *þrinhwaną (to press), from Proto-Indo-European *trenkʷ- (to push, press). Cognate with English throng, Icelandic þröngur, Nynorsk trong, German dringen.
