  1. (rail transport) An unpowered car / coach / carriage included in the formation of a diesel multiple unit or an electric multiple unit.
    • 1960 September, “Inter-city diesel units for the Hull-Liverpool service of the N.E.R.”, in Trains Illustrated, page 560:
      Of the trailer cars, one is a 64-seater open second, with two lavatories; the other is the buffet car, with three first class compartments and a first class lavatory of larger dimensions than the others throughout the train.
