Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from translingual Umbrina, coined by French zoologist Georges Cuvier in 1817 on page 174 of Volume I of Le règne animal distribué d'après son organisation as a Latinization of French Ombrines (shadowy ones) from ombre +‎ -ines, inherited from Old French onbre, ombre, from Latin umbra, probably from Old Latin *omra, possibly from a Proto-Indo-European *h₂mr-u-, *h₂mrup-.

Noun

[edit]

umbrine (plural umbrines)

  1. Any of several food fishes of the genus Umbrina of drums.
