From Middle Vietnamese (uịt), from Proto-Vietic *viːt. Alves (2015) suggests a Proto-Tai origin: compare Proto-Tai *pitᴰ, and also Proto-Hlai *ɓit, Proto-Ong-Be *ɓitD1.
