Etymology

Inherited from Old Spanish berguença, from Latin verēcundia, from verēcundus (feeling shame), from vereor (to respect, revere, fear). Doublet of vergüeña, a now obsolete synonym which followed a different evolution path from the same Latin term, and the rare borrowing verecundia.
