From Proto-Vietic *c-pɔt, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *puut ~ *puət (to rub, to stroke); cognate with Riang puət¹, Khasi syrpud (to rub gently), Mon ဗဗတ် (həpòt, to rub), Khmer ពួត (puət, to rub) and ច្បូត (cbout, to caress).
