From Proto-Slavic *věnьcь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *waiˀníkas, from Proto-Indo-European *woyh₁níkos. Cognate with Upper Sorbian wěnc, Polish wieniec, Czech věnec, Old Church Slavonic вѣньць (věnĭcĭ), Russian вене́ц (venéc).
