Possibly from wyrt (“plant, herb”) – cognate of Old English wert (Kentish) and Old English wirt (Late OE), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *wurt- (see wort) – and *wala (“root”), compare Old Norse vǫlr (“round stick”).
