From Proto-Germanic *wurt-, the oblique stem of Proto-Germanic *wrōts (from which root). Cognate with Old Saxon wurt, Old High German wurz (German Wurz), Old Norse urt (Swedish ört), Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍄𐍃 ‎(waurts).
