[edit]From Ottoman Turkish یلمق, ییلمق (yılmaq, “to quail, be cowed”), akin to Chagatai [script needed] (yïlmaq, “to fear, creep”). If the two are indeed related, the verb can be traced back to Proto-Turkic *yï̄l- (“to creep”), which is also the source of *yï̄lan (“snake”). Compare Yakut сыыл (sïïl, “to creep”).
