From Middle Dutch saet, from Old Dutch *sāt, from Proto-West Germanic *sād, from Proto-Germanic *sēdiz. Equivalent to zaaien (to sow) +‎ -d (verbal noun). Compare Low German Saad, German Saat, West Frisian sied, English seed, Danish sæd.
