Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *gómos, a derivation of *gem- (“to press together; to grasp”) and so related to γέμω (gémō, “to be full of”), γέντο (génto, “he/she grasped”), Latin gemō (“to sigh, groan”) and Proto-Slavic *žęti (“to press, squeeze”).
