[edit]From Koine Greek κόκκινος (kókkinos), from κόκκος (kókkos, “grain, seed, kernel”). The modern sense came from grains of holly, which were used to make red dyes. Displaced earlier Ancient Greek ἐρυθρός (eruthrós).
