From Proto-Hellenic *makrós, from Proto-Indo-European *mh₂ḱrós, from *meh₂ḱ- (to increase). By surface analysis, μῆκος (mêkos) +‎ -ρός (-rós). Cognates include Latin macer and Old English mæger.
