Russian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic витати (vitati). From Proto-Slavic *vitati (to dwell; to welcome). The primary meanings "to hover, to soar, to linger (in air)" arose due to the verb's common usage in Old Church Slavonic to refer to birds in the trees.
