Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gordina, equivalent to *gordъ (enclosure; city) +‎ *-ina. By surface analysis, град (grad) +‎ -ина (-ina). Cognate with English garden.

Balkan cognates include Aromanian grãdinã, Albanian gradinë and Romanian grădină.
