[edit]From Proto-Slavic *pъlkъ ("troop"), thought to be a derivative from Proto-Germanic *fulką (“crowd, army”), descendants of which include Old Frisian folk, Old Saxon folk, Old Dutch folk (Dutch volk), Old High German folk (German Volk), Old Norse folk (“people, army”), Old English folc (English folk).
