From Proto-Mordvinic *śəjä~*śijä, possibly inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ćejŋi (jewellery, ornament), whence Northern Sami čikŋa, Eastern Mari ший (šij). Compare also Finnish sievä (cute, pretty).
