[edit]Borrowed from Arabic بَيْت الْمَقْدِس (bayt al-maqdis), but the less common word مَقْدِس (maqdis, “sanctuary, the Temple in Jerusalem”) was mistakenly read as the more common word مُقَدَّس (muqaddas, “holy, sacred”), which are visually identical when written without vowel diacritics.
