Etymology 1

Borrowed from Classical Persian یَک (yak), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾywk'), 𐫏𐫐 (yk /⁠ēwak⁠/), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *Háywah (“one”).

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yeŋ (“sleeve”); cognate with Azerbaijani yen, Bashkir ең (yeñ), Chuvash ҫанӑ (śană), Kazakh жең (jeñ), Kyrgyz жен (jen), Turkmen ýeň, Uyghur يەڭ (yeng), Uzbek yeng and Yakut сиэх (sieq).
