From Proto-Dravidian *ney (oil; ghee). Cognate with Telugu నెయ్యి (neyyi) or నేయి (nēyi), Malayalam നെയ്യ് (neyyŭ), Tulu ನೆಯ್ಯಿ (neyyi), Kodava [script needed] (ney), Konda-Dora [script needed] (neyu).
