From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/ɡ-la (moon; month). Cognate with Tibetan ཟླ་བ (zla ba), Nuosu (hlep), Pa'o Karen လာ, S'gaw Karen လါ (lah), Western Pwo လၩ, Eastern Pwo လာ, Western Kayah ꤜꤢꤧ꤭ (lāe).
