Etymology

Superficially of (いわ) (iwa, stone) + (なし) (nashi, pear); compare synonyms 岩椿(いわつばき) (iwatsubaki, literally stone camellia), 砂苺(すないちご) (sunaichigo, literally sand strawberry). Attested from the 13th century.[1]
