Prefixal form of the pronoun Bulgarian сам (sam, “alone, sole”). Cognate with Sanskrit सम्- (saṃ-, “whole”) (whence Bulgarian санскрит (sanskrit, “perfected form”)).

- The prefix optionally bears secondary stress if two or more unstressed syllables intervene between the prefix and the following stressed syllable (e.g. in самолюбова́ние (samoljubovánije, “narcissism”), самопровозглашённый (samoprovozglašónnyj, “self-proclaimed”)), but not if fewer syllables intervene (e.g. in самоуби́йство (samoubíjstvo, “suicide”), самолёт (samoljót, “airplane”)).
