Etymology

Composed of the root անկ- (ank-), from Proto-Indo-European *sn̥gʷ- (“to sink, fall”), +‎ -ան-. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *sinkwaną. The root is also used independently as անկ, յանգ, ցանկ. See further in ընկենում.

1. (intransitive) to fall; to drop

   անկանել ընդ (ankanel ənd) — to sink under

   անկանել յոտս ուրուք (ankanel yots urukʿ) — to throw one's self or fall at the feet of some one

   անկանել ի վերայ երեսաց (ankanel i veray eresacʿ) — to fall upon one's face, to prostrate

   անկանել ի միտս, զմտօք, ի սիրտ (ankanel i mits, zmtōkʿ, i sirt) — to remember, to recall

   անկանել ի մտաց (ankanel i mtacʿ) — to become mad, to lose one's reason

   անկանել ի յուսոյ (ankanel i yusoy) — to lose hope, to become desperate

   անկանել երեսաց (ankanel eresacʿ) — to be put out of countenance, to be abashed

   անկանել յիշխանութենէ (ankanel yišxanutʿenē) — to lose one's authority, to fall from one's power

2. (intransitive) to fall (of hair, cloths); to descend, to flow

   անկանել ի ճանապարհ, ի չու, յուղի (ankanel i čanaparh, i čʿu, yułi) — to voyage, to travel

4. (intransitive) to chance, to happen; to fall to somebody's lot

   անկանել ի ձեռս ուրուք (ankanel i jeṙs urukʿ) — to fall in the hands or power of someone

5. (intransitive) to come together; to be fitted together; to become friends

   անկանել յոք (ankanel yokʿ) — to associate with (someone), to be intimate with, to confide in

6. (intransitive) to fall under, to become subject to (service, one's charms, bonds, illness, etc.)

   անկանել ընդ (ankanel ənd) — to undergo

7. (intransitive) to pass away, to die (especially in war)

   անկանել ի կենաց, յարեւէ անկանել (ankanel i kenacʿ, yarewē ankanel) — to die, to lose one's life

8. (intransitive) to fall to ruin, to decay, to be impaired, to decline, to fail
9. (intransitive) to devote oneself to; to be busy with; to engage in

   անկանել զբանիւք (ankanel zbaniwkʿ) — to hold a long discourse

10. (intransitive) to fall on (enemies, etc.), to fall (of sleep, clouds, cool)

    անկանել ի վերայ (ankanel i veray) — to come upon unawares, to attack, to surprise

11. (intransitive) to steal away, to slip away, to escape

13. (intransitive) to fall out with, to argue; to fight
