Etymology[edit]

Composed of the root անկ- (ank-), from Proto-Indo-European *sn̥gʷ- (to sink, fall), +‎ -ան- (-an-). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *sinkwaną. The root is also used independently as անկ (ank), յանգ (yang), ցանկ (cʿank). See further in ընկենում (ənkenum).
