Of uncertain origin. Probably a sound-symbolic formation, and/or borrowed from Dravidian or Munda; compare Telugu కలవరము (kalavaramu, confusion). Probably not related to Ancient Greek κόλαφος (kólaphos, a box (on the ears etc.), a slap) and Old Persian 𐎣𐎠𐎼 (k-a-r /⁠kāra⁠⁠/).
