From Pali vihāra (monastery) or Sanskrit विहार (vihāra, academy; sanctuary; temple); perhaps via Old Khmer vihāra (monastery). Compare Modern Khmer វិហារ (vihiə); Lao ວິຫານ (wi hān); Burmese ဝိဟာရ (wi.hara.).
