Derived in the Heian period from writing the man'yōgana kanji 良 in the cursive sōsho style.

- The hiragana syllable ら (ra), whose equivalent in katakana is ラ (ra). It is the thirty-ninth syllable of the gojūon order, and its position in gojūon tables is ら行あ段 (RA-gyō, A-dan; “row RA, section A”).
