Derived in the Heian period from writing the man'yōgana kanji 良 in the cursive sōsho style.

1. The /ra/ syllable.
2. The thirty-ninth character in the gojūon ordering of hiragana. The previous character is よ and the next character is り. The equivalent katakana character is ラ.
