Derived in the Heian period from writing the man'yōgana kanji 呂 in the cursive sōsho style.

1. The /ro/ syllable.
2. The forty-third character in the gojūon ordering of hiragana. The previous character is れ and the next character is わ. The equivalent katakana character is ロ.
