From Latin dies Jovis ("day of Jupiter") through Indian astrology in the fifth century as Sanskrit bṝhaspativāra (bṝhaspati, "the regent of the planet Jupiter") into Buddhist astrology in the 8th century as 木曜日: 木 (もく, moku, "wood", the Buddhist element associated with the planet Jupiter) + 曜日 (ようび, yōbi, "day of the week").
