-inen

  1. (adjectival) A suffix that transforms nouns into adjectives; corresponds to -ous, -en and -y.
    Examples:
    vuoristo (mountain range) → vuoristoinen (mountainous)
    sotku (mess) → sotkuinen (messy)
    kulta (gold) → kultainen (golden)
    talvi (winter) → talvinen (wintry)
    puu (tree; wood) → puinen (wooden)
  2. A suffix yielding an adjective, ending with -va/-vä, meaning tendency to be something.
    taipuva (flexible) -> taipuvainen (inclined, predisposed; to do sth = tekemään jotakin)
