Of unclear origin. Tijmen Pronk suggests a derivation from Proto-Slavic *ľubъ (pleasant, sweet, love). Silvo Torkar suggests a connection to the old Slavic name Ljubovid (one of a lovely appearance), itself from the former. More at Ljubljana.
