Definition:
One of many SOP entries by this contributor over the years. There's no justification for the narrowness of the definition- it's really just someone who drives a truck. More often than not it means someone who drives a truck for a living, but it doesn't have to. Chuck Entz (talk) 04:37, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not sure... To me at least, it refers specifically to the charming people who drive tractor-trailers professionally, and while someone who drives a pickup truck for example is a truck + driver, they're not a truck driver as such. Besides that I thought that terms for professions are generally kept even when they are sop, e.g. basketball player. Haplogy (話) 01:15, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- I agree. To the extent that it is used with respect to a profession, it seems comparable to tennis player. Saying that someone is "a truck driver" does indeed seem to suggest that they drive a semi for a living. A truck driver is a truck driver, even if he happens to be a sub-compact driver in his private life. bd2412 T 01:24, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- Keep. It seems to pass a tennis player test. — TAKASUGI Shinji (talk) 04:51, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- Keep it. And lorry driver should be in too, Americans probably don't know what that is. There are also derivatives such as forklift truck driver, but maybe that's going too far... Donnanz (talk) 13:17, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- google books:"truckdriver" is easily citable, so it passes per WT:COALMINE. That said, I think the tennis player test is absurd. — Ungoliant (falai) 13:27, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- Delete (and preferably annul any "tennis player test"; you can be a good, poor, etc. tennis player which is not always a professional. Equinox ◑ 16:50, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- Looking at the translations, it would pass someone else's test (I forget who); e.g. camionneur and camionero. Donnanz (talk) 18:36, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- Keep: per Takasugi Purplebackpack89 (Notes Taken) (Locker) 15:13, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
- Keep as a translation target per my tentative personal criterion: The term has to be useful for translation into at least three languages and the three translated terms (i) must be single-word ones and (ii) they must not be closed compounds. Translations used for the criterion: Asturian camioneru, Catalan camioner, French camionneur, Italian camionista, Portuguese camionista, Spanish camionero. --Dan Polansky (talk) 16:45, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
- One of these days someone will come up with a good challenge to the "tennis player" test, but it looks like this one isn't it. Given the existence of truckdriver and synonyms such as trucker, it's hard to make a case for deletion. Withdrawn. Chuck Entz (talk) 21:55, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
- Keep, looks useful to me. --Goldenburg111 (talk) 22:27, 15 February 2014 (UTC)
