Inherited from Old Spanish escoger, equivalent to es- + coger, or possibly from a Vulgar Latin *excolligere, from Latin ex- + colligere (“to gather”). Compare Asturian escoyer, Catalan escollir, Extremaduran escogel, Galician escoller, Portuguese escolher.
