  • Hyphenation: ge‧wohnt

Participle[edit]

gewohnt

  1. past participle of wohnen

Adjective[edit]

gewohnt (strong nominative masculine singular gewohnter, not comparable)

  1. usual, customary
  2. familiar, accustomed
  3. wont

Usage notes[edit]

  • In spoken language sometimes confused with the participle gewöhnt, from gewöhnen (to accustom oneself to):
Ein solch hartes Leben war ich vorher nicht gewohnt gewesen.
I hadn't been used to such a hard life before.
Nur langsam hatte ich mich an das harte Leben gewöhnt.
Only slowly did I get used to / adapt to the hard life.
  • Gewöhnen describes the process of accustoming oneself to something, gewohnt sein emphasizes the fact that one is already familiar with something, or doing something regularly, without necessarily appreciating it.[1]
  • Historically, gewohnt ruled the genitive case. In modern usage, gewohnt almost always takes the accusative case.
