From Old French paroistre < Vulgar Latin *parescere < Latin pārēre, present active infinitive of pāreō. Compare Occitan paréisser, Catalan parèixer, Spanish and Portuguese parecer.

3. To appear, to seem

   Il paraît avoir 40 ans. — He seems forty (years old).
