From Middle High German süln, suln, soln, from Old High German *sullen, *solōn (attested in bisullen), from Proto-Germanic *sulwijaną, *sulwōną (to soil, make dirty), from Proto-Indo-European *sūl- (thick liquid). Cognate with English soil.
