  • curprev 15:5915:59, 24 September 2022Geographyinitiative talk contribs 10,258 bytes −17 →‎Etymology: Removed "|lit=Upon-the-Sea". Basis: per my comment at Talk:Shanghai#"Upon-the-Sea", I am not satisfied with the "glove-like fit" or harmony between rural English geographical nomenclature and this explanation for the name of a location in Asia. Even if it were a "100% accurate" literal translation, there must be an accounting for 上海浦 in this etymology section. Without this added level of analysis, this is an eyesore. undo

Basis: (1) I looked casually but broadly for "Shanghai" before 1840 but didn't see it; (2) I can't find the romanization scheme where "hai" is considered an English orthography/spelling for ㄏㄞ, hence although "shang" ㄕㄤ seems pretty clearly from English, I say "likely" as was said here: https://en.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?title=Wiktionary:Etymology_scriptorium/2022/August&diff=68631244&oldid=68629828 undo

Basis: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Template:etystub says "The {{etystub}} template is used to mark an etymology which is a stub: information in an Etymology section that is overly short and/or lacking detail." Basis: We are sitting here in 2022 thinking we are the hot shit. But people came up with this word before Tongyong Pinyin, before Hanyu Pinyin, and before Wade-Giles. You can't say an English language word comes from a system that was created after that word is attestable. That defies the concept of etymology and makes etymology about modern politics rather than facts.1860 book; #* {{seemoreCites|en}} undo
