ác is derived from Proto-Vietic *ʔaːk (crow), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kʔaak ~ *kʔaik (crow; to caw); cognate with Semai eu'ak, Bahnar ak, Khmer ក្អែក (kʼaek). Compare also bồ các.
