From Old Galician-Portuguese agua (“water”), from Latin aqua (“water”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ekʷeh₂ (“water”). Cognate with Galician auga, Spanish agua, Catalan aigua, Occitan aiga, French eau, Italian acqua and Romanian apă.
