Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse ǿgja, from Proto-Germanic *ōgijaną (to frighten, to scare), causative of *aganą (to fear, to be scared). Cognate with Old English onœ̄ġan, Gothic 𐍉𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ōgjan).
