Etymology

From Vulgar Latin or Late Latin ingannāre, present active infinitive of ingannō (trick, deceive, mock) (attested in a gloss), from Latin *ganno or ganniō. Compare Aromanian angan, angãnari (call), Italian ingannare (deceive, cheat), Spanish engañar, Portuguese enganar, Catalan enganyar, Albanian gënjej. Cf. also Medieval Latin gannatura, ingannatura (mocking).
