Etymology

[edit]

Of debated origin. Either from a Proto-Finno-Ugric stem + -öm (noun-forming suffix), or derived from a stem of Turkic origin, the same as in örül (“to be happy, rejoice”) and örvend (“to have pleasure, enjoy”).[1]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ˈørøm]
  • Audio:(file)
  • Rhymes: -øm
  • Hyphenation: öröm
  • Syllabification: ö‧röm

Noun

[edit]

öröm (plural örömök or örömek)

  1. joy, pleasure
    Synonym: boldogság

Declension

The forms with the linking vowel e (especially plural forms) are slightly archaic and more literary in style than those with ö.
